  7. chawan has a custom terminal module, so my knowledge about the standard X/Open curses is not that great. That said, for the actual escape sequences, XTerm's ctlseqs.ms[1] is an invaluable resource. I also took many ideas from nick black's notcurses[2], and I especially recommend his notes on "sprixels".[3] [1]: https://invisible-island.net/xterm/ctlseqs/ctlseqs.html [2]: https://nick-black.com/dankwiki/index.php/Not…

  13. Sixel is a fun side quest as well, if you want to encode it on your own. You get to work on a color quantization and/or dithering algorithm in $CURRENT_YEAR. And if you're doing text with images, integrating both Sixel and Kitty is especially painful because they have completely different display models. (In particular, Sixel is cell based, so you get Z-ordering for free - with the caveat that writing text on top of…

  15. I think, because the reason is what we want from our tools is different. I already use a much sophisticated tool for my tasks, and project planning (Pagico), and what I want is a bona fide desktop wiki which I want to store my technical research and howto docs (and share them in my digital garden). This is what Obsidian is. If I wanted something to organize my tasks and other things, I'd take a much different route.…

  23. Fair. Notcurses' principal author aspires for it to provide a widget toolkit for TUIs[1], but much of the demo and much of the commit log to date is heavily focused on graphical capabilities and lower-level details. It may be that one day it ships with a robust widget toolkit; or perhaps someone else will build another library on top of notcurses with that as the principal focus. I'm also impressed with the effort p…

  29. Thanks for the kind words, hax0r! (I'm the author). Notcurses 1.5.0 ought be out by this week's end, complete with "new" (as much as anything is "new") Quadrant Blitter Technique: https://nick-black.com/images/new-terminal-technique.png and of course, if you've never seen it, be sure to check out `notcurses-demo`. it's come a long way since 1.1.0, but this video from January still captures the essence of the project…
