  5. > But as we get closer to 100 lines I doubt that it's more understandable and readable to have it all in one big blob of code. Well, but that's exactly what I'm pushing back against. I think the rule of 30 is often a mistake. I think if you're going out of your way to avoid long functions, then you are probably over-abstracting your code. I don't necessarily know that I would inline a quicksort function, because tha…

  7. > I think the best compromise is small summary comments at various points of functions that "hold the entire thought". I think this is the best, honestly, it reaps most benefits of small single-use functions, without compromising readability or requiring jumping. This is also how John Carmarck recommends in this popular essay: http://number-none.com/blow/john_carmack_on_inlined_code.htm...

  17. To have a compositor not introduce a frame of latency more or less requires it to race the beam, which has definitely been suggested[1], but you can see how it’d be difficult, and so far no operating systems have tried as far as I know. And as for good frame pacing support in UI toolkits (and not just game engines), well, one can dream. Until both of these are in place, 2.5±0.5 seems to be the hard limit, the questi…

Note however that there were several software-related crashes in the early days of Gripen. Might not be related to exactly this code, but to the problem of regulating the feedback loops to manage the plane's purposeful instability

  23. I don't think this is the first time Carmack been talking about functional programming and against mutability, here is some of his thoughts from 2014: http://number-none.com/blow/john_carmack_on_inlined_code.htm... Just because someone is expressing a thought after you or others have already thought about it, doesn't mean they're trying to push it as something new and exciting, it's just another perspective.
