  1. Joey Hess raises questions: "What I would ask my lawyers about the new Github TOS' If I were looking over the TOS with my lawyers, I'd ask these questions... 4 License Grant to Us This seems to be saying that I'm granting an additional license to my software to Github. Is that right or does "license grant" have some other legal meaning? If the Free Software license I've already licensed my software under allows for…

  5. That is actually not the case. Say a git server is in the middle of a write to refs/heads/master . You atomically snapshot the FS and then a power outage kills the server. The repository state will have a small chance of lock files that are never removed. Depending on the lock, future writes to a ref or to the repository can fail. Not the worst situation as data lose won't occur but definitely not a stable state. If…

The remaining hard part is the adapter layer to enable the extra applications such as the issue tracker to use the Git repository for storage. Joey Hess has a good article about Git "databranches" here: https://joeyh.name/blog/entry/databranches/

  19. No one even attempts to quantify the the effects they claim are so important. Perhaps I didn't phrase that strongly enough but growing the economy or making it more efficient is not the point. It's at most a rationalization. go live in a rural area, consume very little, and survive with bad internet That's not a realistic advice. It's extremely difficult, puts having a family largely out of reach, and places you awa…
