  1. > So you have no examples or explanations for what “traditions” I have plenty. Now, I do not wish to be rude Abduhl, but I find your "question" a little disingenuous, and your expectation that I act as your personal tutor on well documented matters a tad entitled. This isn't my full-time job, and I come here mainly to look for interesting and unusual viewpoints. Have you done even the most cursory research into the…

  3. You can definitely make a moral argument in favor of piracy as a form of civil disobedience. Aaron Schwartz [1] and the book Free Culture[2] are the two bigger examples that come to mind. Why would preventing corporations from funding politicians prevent the individual members of a corporation from funding politicians? 15. Yes, I'm against protecting abstract ideas with no implementation. Even when there is an implementation, it's not obvious to me that it should be especially protected by a government (especially a fallible government, which is all of them, as well-meaning as they might be). I'm definitely not in favor of granting you protection on a "new form of scheduling". A program or calendar or whatever that implements it, sure…

  17. Matt didn't get the viacom / youtube thing right. The DMCA provides a certain copyright-related safe harbor to online service providers, not just ISPs as he states. It is far from clear that youtube violated copyrights (that is the point of the litigation after all). see: http://www.lessig.org/blog/2007/03/viacom_v_youtube.html

Yeah. Democracy. It sucks. It is worth considering Lessig's approach to changing Congress as a way to mitigate some of these problems: http://change-congress.org/ Lots of worthwhile and related stuff on his blog: http://www.lessig.org/blog/

It won't let them read the book from start to finish. (I was able to read 18 pages.) Next to the "preview" it displays links to buy the book from various retailers. 2) Do you think Google hurts websites by letting people search their contents and see excer…

  29. Everyone should read into the real history of so-called "intellectual property"- a made up phrase that tries to conflate trademarks, copyright and patents as if they had anything to do with each other. Lawrence Lessig's accounts are a good introduction [0]. Research the censorship laws in the century prior to the Statute of Anne, and the burnings in St James' Square where 'unauthorised' publishers were immolated on…
