If there are apps on MacOS that can't handle high dpi mode, I haven't run into them as a developer (or doing photo editing, video editing, plus whatever other hobbies I do). Same. I haven’t run into any apps that don’t support high dpi mode. Even terminal apps look great on my Retina 4k iMac screen. Before getting this machine nearly a year ago, I couldn't natively view high dpi graphics for web projects I’d work on…

HN discussion>I (maybe I am wrong) have been intending to treat team-members as "some dudes with bumps on their chest that may have various after hours habits that are none of my concern". FWIW, this is personally my ideal working environment. I can't speak for women in general, and I'm not a moral authority, but this is exactly the kind of treatment I want from my coworkers. >what should I do to be better? I don't know, honestl…

HN discussionIronically, the author of dpi.lv ( https://lea.verou.me/ ) doesn't even bother to have a "desktop-friendly" site. On desktop everything (font, header, images, buttons) is huge and ~50% of the vertical space is wasted. Not the best calling card for someone living "at the bleeding edge of web standards". Or maybe it looks Ok if you view it on a Mac?

HN discussionThat principle has been stated and developed in other context. For example, there was an earlier HN post about composition of features ( https://lea.verou.me/blog/2023/eigensolutions/?latest ) Another example is in ecology. Resilient ecology has many possible interactions among members of the ecology (including humans). An "invasive species" isn't necessarily one that is not native to the ecology, but one that is ab…

HN discussionGood question. There’s a good post from Lea Verou worth reading. https://lea.verou.me/blog/2024/wcs-vs-frameworks/ I think anything meant to be like a widget is a good fit. But an iframe you have the option of putting an app behind it while a web component is purely front end code. So maybe that’s a limitation for you. We at least plan to wrap iframes in web components for a nicer embed API.

HN discussionThis is nice. I didn't try but to get a pseudo-random variation of the book height, will it be possible to do a pre-defined Cicada Principle[1] method, say, pick 20-30 heights and keep picking them up. There seem to be quite a lot of people who have their own book collection. I'm still looking for something simple that can spit out a HTML front; and yet to find something I like. On another note, recently I was looki…

HN discussionA gentle reminder: conditionals aren't new to CSS; @supports and @media are conditionals; so are style queries. if() just codifies behaviors and hacks [1] developers were already doing. [1]: https://lea.verou.me/blog/2020/10/the-var-space-hack-to-togg...

HN discussion95% of the more complex errors I've seen* in CSS have been some combination of a misunderstanding of positioning ( https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/position ) and the box model ( https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/box_model ). The other 5% of relatively complex display errors are actually due to unfortunate choices when writing the HTML. I think once you understand those, the rest is re…
