What Hacker News says?

  1. Hi, Mithril author here. I'm not familiar w/ React's implementation, so I can't speak for them. With Mithril, the diffing algorithm is basically a recursive tree diff. In addition to diffing at the attribute level (and taking care of some broken edge cases), it can do things like detect parent changes and reattach unmodified trees to new parents, if needed. I generally don't like corner-case-specific optimizations b…

  5. Leo Horie, author of Mithril, has written a blog post where he explains how to re-implement some of the article's examples using Mithril (React-like client-side Javascript MVC framework): http://lhorie.github.io/mithril-blog/an-exercise-in-awesomen...

  7. I experimented with React a bit but I was a bit bugged by how large it was. The basic idea of rendering to a virtual DOM and having unidirectional data flow is really simple but I had trouble actually diving in to React's source code and seeing things under the hood (for example, I had to find a blog to see how the diffing algorithm worked). What are the other libraries out there that we can use for this virtual DOM…

  11. Why not mithril? https://lhorie.github.io/mithril/ Seems to be way faster, and easier to learn than any of those other framework/libs. For example: How is Mithril Different from Other React: Source: https://lhorie.github.io/mithril/comparison.html "The most visible difference between React and Mithril is that React's JSX syntax does not run natively in the browser, whereas Mithril's uncompiled templates do. Both can…

  13. There's some truth to that. My own experience was in writing a lot of vanilla JS, being pretty happy with it, and then wanting to grow bigger I investigated some of the frameworks. At the time, Angular 1.x was considered the thing, so I implemented a project in that (multiple drag and drop lists, items from lists into other lists, and so on), and tried to follow best practices as far as I could tell. DRY, decoupling…

  17. This post reminds me of these other two [0, 1] that ultimately lead Leo Horie to create Mithril [2], a tiny (5 KB down the line) but complete MVC framework that also eschews most of the criticism raised by the OP. The Mithril blog is also worth a look, it addresses a lot of concrete scenarios with recipies to solve common front end problems with the framework. For example, here's a post on asymetrical data binding […

  21. Mithril is roughly equal in scope to Knockout+Sammy. The small gap between what most frameworks call "bidirectional data binding" and what it actually is in terms of vanilla js can be bridged with simple functions (I talk about that in a slightly more advanced context here: http://lhorie.github.io/mithril-blog/asymmetrical-data-bindi... ). Dependency tracking can refer to two things: tracking changes for the purpose…

  23. FWIW, the framework I wrote (Mithril) is a direct product of working on a multiple-man-year Angular codebase and the pains that arise from such a beast. I wrote about that here ( http://lhorie.github.io/mithril-blog/lessons-learned-from-an... ) On a related topic, I talk about complexity walls (the idea of code that outgrows a framework's zone of comfort) here ( http://lhorie.github.io/mithril-blog/decreasing-cognit…

  25. Hm. How does this compare to Mithril JS ( http://lhorie.github.io/mithril/ )? I just looked at the doc and read this thread (at 61 comments). Same: * virtual dom * has its own tag syntax * Mithril has MSX, but also supports regular JS data structure with m("tag", {attr:val, onclick: func, [more tags, "text"]} * router Different: * Where Mithril allows you to build and transform resulting template structure before vi…

  27. how is this compared to mithril? https://lhorie.github.io/mithril/ , trying to find a front-end js framework/library these days for an embedded product (use browser to configure it), angular seems a bit heavy for me, have not learned react yet.
