HN discussionI actually run quite a few of them in parallel, but that doesn't solve the problem: As the other person stated: charging lead acid is time constrained. And that means that you can't fully charge the battery within the time period when you have sun. Lead acid deteriorates quickly if left (partially) discharged. This is why lead acid works so well with cars (almost always fully charged at all times). Depleted lead aci…

HN discussionMy own battery + solar powered blog [0] is 100% inspired by lowtechmagazine. I am based in The Netherlands and due to my sub optimal location, I have to cheat in the winter by recharging from mains about weekly. I still do get some sun, but nowhere nearly enough to get through the day, let alone the night. [0]: https://louwrentius.com/this-blog-is-now-running-on-solar-po... HN discussionI'm hosting my static blog site on a physical Raspberry Pi 3B+ powered by Solar [1]. That blog post got hugged by HN but it didn't even raise the CPU above 10% on a single core. And a Raspberry Pi 3B+ is dog slow. And severely limited by bandwidth, unlike the Raspberry Pi 4B+. (But it uses less power so that's why I use a 3B+). However I have another point to make. Professional rack-mount servers from HP and Dell ca…

HN discussionThe author is on to something, but still, most cases of technical debt aren't really technical debt as how Ward Cunningham meant the concept. His idea is to regularly pause, and take your time to incorporate your new knowledge about the problem at hand into your code. There is no other way, because if code concepts don't reflect the problem space, development will slow down, become cumbersome. But what I see and wha…

HN discussionI not only run my blog on a computer in the corner of the room, it's solar-powered as well. At night it is supported by a bunch of lead acid batteries[0]. If you can you should host your own blog/website on your own physical computer at home. Especially for blogs, availability and redundancy is just not critical. And if you do a little bit of preparation you can recover quickly from any failure. It is fun, you may l…

HN discussion>ECC is recommended but many people, myself included, have run many stable years without ECC. zfs requires ECC[0][1], do not skimp on this. I ran many zfs pools for >8 years without issues until silent memory corruption happened to me, and now I can't access my data anymore (zfs won't let me mount a zpool that fails scrub checks). 0: Oracle (and previously Sun) documentation recommends ECC to prevent silent corrupti…

HN discussionThis is what I did, I just snagged some cheap Rosewill case off of newegg with 12 bays, a PCIe sata card and packed the case with drives. You can slice and dice the drives however you like. HN discussionI am using Debian with ZoL, but it's now ancient. Just ZFS + NFS & SMB. https://louwrentius.com/71-tib-diy-nas-based-on-zfs-on-linux... I would now go for Ubuntu + ZoL myself. I bought all capacity up front and paid the ZFS tax. So I don't need to expand as I go. But if you want to expand as you go, Linux + MDADM are still fine in my opinion. It's a tradeoff. Do you want to 'pay' the ZFS tax and expand at a cost, or…
