HN discussionI used to have a printout of https://www.michaelbach.de/ot/mot-snakes/index.html over my desk. People got so freaked out by a piece of paper "moving" that there were people who literally refused to go to my desk. :-)

HN discussionConsider the following visual phenomena / optical illusion: https://michaelbach.de/ot/sze-silhouette/index.html The silhoute may be perceived as rotating clockwise or counterclockwise. There is not in fact enough information to determine which direction objectively. Now suppose 2 types of experiments: A) someone wears spy glasses and observes this effect, and is tasked to regularly speak out what direction (s)he per…

HN discussionI was looking into this when the 12-dot illusion came out, and found an interesting refutation of the receptive field theory regarding a related illusion - the original Hermann grid. I'm not sure if it also applies to the 12-dot illusion, where the illusion seems to be more about foveal/peripheral accuracy. You can read about it here, and play with a demo: http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/lum-herGridCurved/index.html ht…

HN discussionI've seen the reverse phi illusion effect crop up a few times in various places. [0] But as the paper says, it typically involved changing the luminance of the foreground object. It's cool to get a breakdown of exactly what makes this effect tick. Are there any other good non-static optical illusions such as this? As in illusions which require some element that changes over time cyclically in order to produce the ef…

HN discussionWhen you see how our visual system works with so much heuristics and hacks the surprising part is that we are able to get things right the major part of the time. http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/ But that is not so scary as when you realize that the rest of things, like how we reason, have the same kind of weird hacks and hacky solutions fine tuned to live in Africa 250,000 years ago. So humans can design a super-compl…

HN discussionMy senior research thesis in undergrad was based on this illusion, using it to render basic heightmaps in a constant top-down orientation. This made the technique usable on PDAs and Web games at a time when even 2D isometric rendering was too slow/battery intensive. https://michaelbach.de/ot/ang-KitaokaBulge/index.html

HN discussionThis is my favorite optical illusion: https://michaelbach.de/ot/col-McCollough/index.html Unlike ordinary optical illusions, the McCollough effect alters your color perception for days or even weeks after you've finished adapting to it. The mechanism is still not understood.
