What Hacker News says?
FreeBSD has an analogous mechanism called etcupdate[1]. I think Boot Environments[2] are pretty similar to SilerBlue but I don't know how BEs manage /etc. [1] https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=etcupdate [2] https://mwl.io/archives/2363

HN discussionOn a slightly related note, Michael W. Lucas[1] is working on an upcoming book entitled "Run Your Own Mail Server", that will be published shortly (there's a Kickstarter campaign as well[2]). I attended his tutorial and talk at BSDCan[3] this year and both were excellent. I highly recommend buying the book when it comes out (or supporting the Kickstarter), it will go through all the gory details of setting up and ru…

HN discussionOf course, there is Ed Mastery by Michael W. Lucas: https://mwl.io/nonfiction/tools#ed that you can read in an afternoon easily. It helps you understand some UNIX history, explains why stuff works the way it works and you can have a good laugh at that.

HN discussionI have created a script, that mimics most of the modern CA and intermediate CA infrastructure for testing HTTPS/ Content Security Policy and more at OrgPad, where I work. TLS Mastery by Michael W Lucas https://mwl.io/nonfiction/networking#tls helped me a lot. Having an internal CA is a lot of work, if you want to do it properly and not just for some testing. It is still rather hard to setup HTTPS properly without re…

HN discussionMichael Lucas wrote up a nice piece about setting up an Unbound DNS Server on OpenBSD eight years ago.[0] It might need some updating, but probably you could do that by reading the man page.[1] [0] https://mwl.io/archives/580 [1] https://man.openbsd.org/unbound.conf

HN discussionI don't have much experience with stunnel, but I have used sshuttle and SSH SOCKS proxy/ tunneling, SSHFS and other tricks quite a bit also for work. I have done SSH over Tor as a hidden service but I haven't played with obfsproxy just yet. Some people made tunnels (including SSH) over DNS, which can be handy as well. This is probably just enough to check HN, read email and SSH/ Mosh to somewhere to fix something wh…

HN discussionI suspect there is but I dont know about it (I use SmartOS / Triton). There is a small list of jail management tools [1]. If it doesnt exist it should be really easy to make since FreeBSD jails (usually) sit on ZFS you can easily use "ZFS send" to create a image of the ZFS dataset. All that one would need to add is some (minor) tooling. On the more "heavy side" I know that for example Project Fifo has experimental F…
