  11. I totally forgot that Lisp's List processing came from Fortran: a system called FLPL. This had the CAR and CDR naming (in an ugly form, with additional prefix and suffix characters: XCARF and XCDRF). https://www.informatimago.com/articles/flpl/flpl.html

  13. It's kind of a boring and tired point, but for another perspective on "is X a Lisp?" it's worth reviewing the Lisp 1.5 manual from 1962: http://www.softwarepreservation.org/projects/LISP/book/LISP%... Consider the program at the bottom of page 29 that calculates the length of a list. What's the delta to get it to run in X? In Clojure, quite a lot of modification is needed. Scheme, slightly less. Common Lisp though,…

  15. Clojure does not implement Lisp lists. Just plain and simple. It may partly look like Lisp lists. But they aren't. Functions are randomly either looking compatible or not at all. ATOM does something completely different. CAR does not exist. FIRST exists, but works on persistent lazy sequences (wonderful, but it is not using Lisp-style chained cons cells). Btw., LispWorks, plain: CL-USER 23 > CAR (QUOTE (1 2)) 1 A mo…

PJB has become a bit (too little for my taste) of a persona non grata in the common lisp world (which has a large overlap with the emacs world) ever since it was suggested and so far not disproved (names match, nicknames match) that he's the person behind https://twitter.com/ogamita edit: To make it more precise, full names are identical and http://www.informatimago.com/index.html links to http://pjb.ogamita.org whi…

  20. > This article fails to explain -why- one would want to switch to emacs from vim. In other words it does one thing, hopefully well. The philosophy behind the original vi, and IIRC originally vim too — didn’t it previously have an explicit non-goal of adding an embedded terminal emulator? If it did, those days seem over, so you IMO you might as well use an editor that does many things well (eg. having a proper design…

  22. To be fair, despite what the name “Windows” would have you believe, there is much more to an OS than a WM. Emacs can indeed serve as a perfectly good shell for a kernel - see, e.g., http://www.informatimago.com/linux/emacs-on-user-mode-linux....

  23. So here's this new kid, systemd, mindlessly gobbling os functionality and annoying the elders with binary log files. And then the sleeping giants wake, Lisp and Emacs. 62-year old Lisp, based on Lambda calculus from 80-90 years ago, pretty much pioneered much of computer science. And 44-year old emacs and 35-year old elisp, they pioneered subsuming. I mean, there's a church of emacs. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wik…

That's what I say: vague ideas don't matter much when forming language families. Code does. Books. Libraries. Communities. What were those ideas that were dropped? Fexprs would be one. That was dropped when compilers were used and Fexprs were found not to be compilable. That happened in the 70s before…

  27. Sure, emacs is an OS [1], you can write any kind of programs for it. On the other hand, you can do symbolic calculus in Scheme - see, for example, MIT Scheme-based Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics (which, incidentally, is perfectly usable from inside emacs).
