Here's a great article that discusses the 'Metro', or 'Flat' design pattern that is now gracing the shores of many new up and coming projects and websites → http://sachagreif.com/the-flat-sink/

HN discussionVPS. http://sachagreif.com runs on it and got to the top 5 of HN many times without any trouble (I'm using W3 Total Cache). The only reason I'm thinking about switching away is that their control panel is a little messy, and they don't support Git deployment out of the box (although you can activate it via ssh, which is what I did). It also feels faster than PHPFog for some reason, especially the WordPress admin. So…

HN discussionI also wrote about why and how I wrote this essay here: http://sachagreif.com/making-flat-pixels/ Basically it was a good exercise in responsive design, and was also a chance for me to try out publishing a book on Amazon. And since this is just static HTML, it was also nice to write something completely free of the constraints of a blog layout and see how the content shaped the design. In fact, I'm now thinking I mi…

HN discussionAgreed. These are great books, but "design for hackers" implies that these book will help you "hack" design, which they won't. These books will help you get a better understanding of the principles of good design at root level, but they won't do much if you're just looking to make your app look or work better. On the other hand, these books are much more practical: http://bootstrappingdesign.com/ http://designforhac…

HN discussionI'd definitely use this on my blog ( http://sachagreif.com ) if it was officially supported (or at least tolerated) by HN somehow. And the fact that people can only comment if they have an HN account makes it even better!

I'm a developer too, for the last year I've been working on my UI & UX skills - and I've somehow managed to get paid to built out product features for the web (UI, UX + code) professionally. Here's what I figured out (YMMV): --- For UI design Books aren't that helpful, you have learn by doing. Instead, for theory Treehouse offers a primer on HTML, CSS & UI design which provided a great foundation, they have courses…
