HN discussionYou can avoid the extra request for an image using a data URI - http://www.phpied.com/data-uris-mhtml-ie7-win7-vista-blues/ The main advantage of CSS is that you can change the color and appearance of components without using a graphics package, and they might scale better. But that's about it. It was a technical exercise rather than a proof of concept. The icons themselves are very simple and limited. I wouldn't re…

HN discussionOr if you use firefox, hide things with CSS in your profile's `userContent.css` I've been using this for years to hide everything that's not video: ytd-app #guide, ytd-app #page-manager ytd-browse, ytd-app #secondary, ytd-app #comments { display: none !important; } #hnmain .subtext { visibility: hidden !important; } Source: https://www.phpied.com/defining-user-styles/

HN discussionyeah, possibly. This is old reasearch [1] with oldish minifiers (e.g. no UglifyJS) and only one script - jQuery from 5 years ago. However I don't expect large discrepancies if the reseasrch is duplicated with new modifiers and larger sample. What would be more interesting is to see the results of the different minifications. E.g. how much you get from simply removing comments and whitespace? How much if you also ren…

HN discussionSteve definitely kicked "high performance" into overdrive at Y!, but he's one of many people who have contributed from Yahoo: Stoyan Stefanov write weekly about performance on his blog http://www.phpied.com/ and actually just released "Web Testing Framework" at Velocity which is a YSlow plugin. HN discussionI seriously doubt it. You only remove 1 extra request with this technique. The main advantage is that you don't have to maintain a sprite image (but using this without some tool would also be cumbersome). IMHO one saved request isn't work doing the same thing twice. And MHTML ( http://www.phpied.com/mhtml-when-you-need-data-uris-in-ie7-a... ) doesen't come as a saviour either, as you have to duplicate all images in…

HN discussionI don’t know about the brain but it’s good for the final results in my experience coding, writing and composing (orchestral music). The results are better and it takes less time if I start with pen and paper before “committing” to the computer. One of my favorite authors Jennifer Egan also writes fiction on paper (non-fiction articles still on the computer). More thoughts: https://www.phpied.com/starting-in-the-anal…

HN discussionFair point, but I try to avoid second-guessing what's best for companies other than my own to do. For all I know, the bandwidth savings are greater than the cost of the engineer who implemented it.
