  1. Thank you for documenting exactly how some of the more absurd bugs we encounter in the wild might actually happen. :) E.g. https://www.talospace.com/2019/04/broadcom-bcm5719-libre-fir...

  7. “Much lower” is still quite expensive compared to a mainstream platform: the absolute minimum if you already had all the other pieces would be the motherboard and CPU bundle for $2,133.77: https://secure.raptorcs.com/content/BK1B01/intro.html That’s 8 cores, which since Power9 has SMT4 means 32 threads. The 4 core CPU bundle is a bit cheaper but when you add the 2u CPU cooler its price gets very close, so it’s not w…

  11. It does, actually: the POWER9 Raptor Talos II I'm typing this on uses the C++ interpreter entirely right now. (We're working on a JIT: https://www.talospace.com/2021/07/firefox-90-on-power-and-ji... ) I don't see any reason you couldn't build Firefox on a RISC-V system. EDIT: Actually, there is a reason, but it's not JavaScript. Firefox needs stubs written for XPCOM to map the ABI for XPConnect calls. Once this is d…

  13. I would have killed for the handcrank during the G1G1 days, but it turns out it wasn't _completely_ vapourware. I finally saw a working one at Linux SCaLE 17x years after the fact, so I'm assuming some small number must actually have been produced. It wasn't practical, but I still love the concept. https://www.talospace.com/2019/03/a-close-look-at-raptor-bla...

  17. The long version is https://www.talospace.com/2020/01/another-amiga-you-dont-wan... but the tl;dr version is that the Amiga diehards who would buy this still want to use Amiga as their daily drivers, yet these are CPUs that a 15-year-old-plus Power Mac would mop the floor with. It's just handing their detractors another stick for a fresh beating. As a strictly retrocomputing solution that wouldn't be a problem, but…

  21. Whilst it is true indeed that POWER10 requires an opaque blob of firmware goo, Raptor was supposed to bring a follow-up to POWER9 that uses the Solid Silicon S1[0] instead of POWER10: Raptor yesterday officially announced that we're not getting Power10 systems. The idea is we're going to be getting something better: the Solid Silicon S1. It's Power ISA 3.1 and fully compatible, but it's also a fully blob-free OpenPO…

It seems that WebAssembly support requires the JavaScript JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler: > “ Unfortunately I have not had time to do much more work on the JIT because of the holidays, family responsibilities and $DAYJOB. 27. For those who are not familiar with the author of this blog, he is a PowerPC enthusiast and the maintainer of TenFourFox, a Firefox port to PPC OS X. He's also currently working on a new PPC JIT for (modern) Firefox on Linux (a project for which he is looking for volunteers to assist him[1]) to bring it to speed parity with Chrome on PPC (which already has a PPC JIT). 29. Don't forget that POWER10 is no longer ryf-certifiable. Of course the ryf certification may be questionable but it is an established bar, POWER9 was able to cross it, POWER10 probably won't: https://www.talospace.com/2020/08/power10-sounds-really-grea... https://twitter.com/RaptorCompSys/status/1435510763402244105...
