My own collection of free 8x8 fonts might suit your needs at https://damieng.com/zx-origins Looking forward to trying this exciting rust tool in my chain as well to see what additional formats I can include. (Update: Seems the PIFO tool is not open-source :( I guess I'll stick to using scripts + FontLab Studio 5)

  11. I like to use Code Envy R: http://damieng.com/blog/2008/05/26/envy-code-r-preview-7-cod... . It's legible at 8pt, which lets me fit big amounts of code even on smaller screens.

  15. That argument flounders on the fact that in the pre -VGA (more strictly pre-CGA) world boldface and blink did not change colours, either. There was a whole world of monochrome video terminals. And, furthermore, the fonts during the heyday of the home computer revolution were boldface in several cases, including the BBC Micro's graphics mode character set, even though they were smaller than 8 by 8. * https://damieng.…

  17. IMO what killed it was the text rendering. They brought their font smoothing over from Mac OS and that's not what Windows users are acclimated to. It might be more "correct" in some ways, especially from a graphic design / typography standpoint, but it looks fuzzy when you put it next to ClearType on the same screen. https://damieng.com/blog/2007/06/13/font-rendering-philosoph... https://blog.codinghorror.com/whats-…

  19. > One Exemple is this myth, that OSX' font rendering is always better thant the rendering of windows' rendering because OSX applies more anti-aliasing to the fonts. As soon as you get to a certain font size - usually the one you use for articles - anti-aliased fonts are a pain-in-the-eyes. It's not quite that simple, and I'm not sure everyone would agree with that assertion. It's more to do with the fact that the fo…

  21. I wish there were more "medium" themes. I usually find light modes too harsh, but I think that's because the background is often pure white or close to it, as opposed to something softer. I think dark modes look cooler and I like the aesthetic from an artsy perspective, but they're not something I enjoy working in all day. I like the lower contrast ones to an extent, but they're still not ideal. My preferred Visual…

  25. I agree that there's substantial qualitative difference between sub-pixel antialiased text and the plain render. The former takes advantage of greater lateral resolution and perceptual differences between the primary colors. That said, I wouldn't consider the absence of that technique jarring. I intentionally change bright-on-dark text to greyscale antialiasing[1], to counter the halation[2]. All the links to images…
