Called good for life-extension updates; a reader should follow its links and read the comments; an interesting post on plasma dilution; a Horvath Clock project

From the paper (DEEX - "Depressed mood and exhaustion"): "Nonetheless, adding DEEX to a risk score based on classical risk factors resulted in only nonsignificant improvement of mortality risk prediction." Regarding the causal relationship: "Although not a proof of causality, in general, depressed subjects are more likely to cluster self-harming lifestyle behaviors and may be less likely to adhere to prescribed medi…

  5. There's another branch of aging research that is gaining traction recently and that feels just so much more sensible. Its basic idea is that there's really no "wear and tear" happening, but rather, aging is a programmed process whereby cells deliberately disable their various cleaning and healing mechanisms via epigenetic alterations. This whole thing is controlled by signal molecules in the bloodstream, and there's…

  9. 48-72 hours is not long enough to regenerate your immune system. Valter Longo has recommended at least 4-5 days to treat auto-immune disorders [1]. I've done 5 day fasts. For something serious I would try 7. [1] http://joshmitteldorf.scienceblog.com/2014/06/12/the-three-d... “3 days is optimal for mice. For humans 4-5 minimum, depending on what you are trying to achieve”

  11. Okay, fair enough. But a major difference is that flu deaths are much more heavily burdened on the the young, whereas Covid is on the very elderly. The death of a 6 month old from flu results in approximately 20 times more QALY loss than an 85 year old. Let me approach it from another angle. Pre-vaccine, it appears that Covid roughly doubled everyone's all-cause mortality.[1] Like it killed 30 year olds at a much lo…

  15. Slightly OT, but I was just reading some fascinating comments in [1]. The post was about cancer and mitochondria. Particularly for me, the series of comments about how the nervous system can play a role in cancer development (via inflammation promoting activity) is fascinating. There are even some comments from Carlos Monteiro, a controversial cardiologist. He postulates that cardiac glycosides (used to treat cardia…

  19. My cursory understanding is that actuarial senescence (the increase in mortality rates for older populations) is not the primary driver of life span in most mammals.[1] Particularly small mammals, like lab rats. Whereas for first-world humans, it's the primary driver. Actuarial senescence makes it devilishly difficult to achieve significant life expectancy gains. Because mortality rates increase with age, life expec…
