What Hacker News says?
What got me when I first started learning is to understand the difference between sound synthesis (which this link is basically for) and music composition. Maybe you're asking for something in between the basics of sound synthesis and full music composition. There's also all the different aspects of composition like drum arrangement, chord progression, melody creation, general music theory, etc. I've collected some…

HN discussionI'm getting all verklempt reading this! - - - - I just want to add that Maxime is the genius who wrote Turing Drawings, one of my personal all-time favorite uses of the computer ever. https://maximecb.github.io/Turing-Drawings/ https://pointersgonewild.com/2012/12/31/turing-drawings/ It's worth looking at the code too, IMO. It made me realize that JS could be beautiful. https://github.com/maximecb/Turing-Drawings -…

HN discussionI too feel a little cynical, because I built basically exactly this back in 2012. Before Google, and before Ableton. AFAIK, it was the first grid sequencer online. The first version used the Mozilla audio API, before Web Audio was even a thing. I wish I was credited for the inspiration somewhere, but I guess it's very possible that this is an independent reinvention. I called it MusicToy: http://maximecb.github.io/M…

HN discussionUnison, the rsync-like tool, has an awesome interface. ( https://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/ ) Prolog. There's a reason it's been king of the Logical Paradigm for decades. Oberon OS. Turing Drawings. ( https://maximecb.github.io/Turing-Drawings/ ) procmail ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procmail ) one of the most beautiful (yet hideous) programs I have ever read.

on “Ask HN: What are your favorite examples of elegant software?”That's really cool! Many of these end up looking like random noise. (So maybe they're PRNGs?) I love the way this one starts out before it devolves into noise: http://maximecb.github.io/Turing-Drawings/#5,3,3,2,3,1,2,2,1...

on “Turing Drawings”As with randomly generated CA, I think the most interesting are the ones that exhibit some large scale characteristic which persists while micro states continue to evolve unpredictably, as for example: https://maximecb.github.io/Turing-Drawings/#4,4,1,3,2,3,2,0,...
